Vessels leaving Lake Huron are forced to take the narrow two-mile wide passage between the Michigan mainland and Bois Blanc Island.  So from 1893 until the light was built in 1929, a lightship has marked this dangerous reef.

NEAT CHARACTERISTICS: This light is a twin to the one built at Martin Reef in 1927.
