Remus Closure

At its special meeting on Monday, January 19, the Chippewa Hills Board of Education voted to permanently close the Remus building.

The Remus building has been closed since March 2025 due to standing water, mold and structural concerns. Since that time, the District has completed multiple inspections and commissioned an independent facilities assessment to better understand the scope of repairs that would be required to safely reopen the building.

Based on the findings of those evaluations, the cost to make the necessary repairs was determined to be financially prohibitive. After reviewing the information and considering long-term fiscal responsibility, the Board determined that permanently closing the building was in the best interest of the District and community.

“We understand that this is a difficult decision for many members of our community,” said Tony Gibson, President of the Chippewa Hills Board of Education. “The Board’s responsibility is to carefully weigh safety, long-term costs, and the overall financial health of the District. The decision was made by the Board of Education with those factors in mind.”

Superintendent Michelle Newman acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision while emphasizing the District’s focus on students and sustainability. “We recognize the history and meaning the Remus building holds for many families,” she said. “At the same time, we must ensure that District resources are used in ways that best support our students now and in the future.”

Additional information regarding timelines and next steps will be shared as it becomes available. Families and community members with questions are encouraged to contact Central Office or attend an upcoming Board of Education meeting.
